HP Photosmart B8550 Inkjet Photo Printer Reviews
The HP Photosmart B8550 is, without a doubt, the finest home printer I have ever owned, and is one of the best 13×19 printers I have ever used. In fact, this is the best printer under $1,000.00 that I have ever used, bar none. The print quality is nothing short of outstanding, the wide variety of compatible sizes make this a very versatile printer, and the affordable supplies make this printer a joy to use and excellent for hobbyists and photography enthusiasts. While this may not be the printer for everyone it is an excellent choice for anyone who is interested in printing large photographs, and saving a great deal of money by printing enlargements for themselves instead of sending them to a lab.
I have been enthusiastically recommending the HP Photosmart B8550 to all my photographer friends, and would suggest this to anyone who has a DSLR camera and wants to try printing big, gorgeous pictures of their favorite shots. This is the most affordable, highest quality, consumer photo printer I have ever used, and I am constantly surprised by the high quality of the results.

I have had this printer now for about 6 weeks. Printed 8 of my top photographs at 13 inches by 19 inches and ran out of yellow and photo black ink. Now I know that the inks that come with the unit are not “full” and I do hope I get a better run from the new XL cartridges. Apart from that I am over the moon with the results of the prints. Crisp clear and they look great at this size. Not a problem to set up but the setup did something to my registry settings and it now takes forever to boot. If your interested in large format printing from an 8mp camera then this is a good buy. I am more than just satisfied with the purchase. The pics are sellable.

I have an Epson Photo Stylus 2000p and paid way more than this HP photosmart printer. They are comparable in print quality. You can print small or large and the quality is amazing. What is great about this printer is the cartridge system. If you run out of a certain color just purchase that color. That is one of the reasons I dumped the Epson printer. If you run out a certain color you have to trash the entire cartridge. Set up was a breeze on the macbook. Rather than using the cd’s in the box I downloaded the latest drivers online. This is best and saves time in case you encounter a problem. Sometimes the cd’s that come with the printer are already outdated. Overall I am very happy with the printer. It is a tad bit large but worth the space used.

I’ve been really happy with the prints that have come out of this printer. I’m not a pro photographer, but I do like to hang my best work on my walls. I used to order my large prints online, but at $20 a pop I found it easy to justify this purchase. By my math, this printer is only worth it if you are going to print large prints. The 4×6 and 5×7 are just too cheap to print at a kiosk or online, and I didn’t feel like I’d ever break even if I just printed those. Though it would still be a lot more convenient.
I’m very impressed by the quality of the prints from this printer. Photos printed on this printer hang right next to photos from professional print labs, and I can’t tell the difference.
The printer was fairly easy to setup. I have Windows Vista (64-bit) which made me worry that there wouldn’t be drivers, but I had no problems. I wish the printer was wireless or network capable, so I could hide the monster in a closet somewhere, but for the size prints this is capable of it doesn’t take up “that much” space. At least it looks good since it’s sitting on my desk.

This printer FAR exceeded my expectations. I returned the Epson 1400 because the quality was awful and I couldn’t get the colors right no matter what adjustments I did. I have always been a fan of HP but I had read reviews for the 1400 and got it instead. What a disappointment. I returned it and bought the HP 8550 and it is best purchase I have made since my Nikon D50. I printed a borderless 13×19 and the quality is better than anything I have had professionally printed. The ink levels didn’t even move. The software takes a little while to load but that’s it. If you are looking for a quality photo printer, don’t look any further. This is the one for you!

For the just less than professional home photo maker, HP hits a home run here with the B8550. Owned it for about 2 months now and would recommend it to anyone who wants a great outfit at a reasonable price.
