Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the sports cap made of plastic and not stainless steel?
Your teeth. Klean Kanteen chose polypropylene #5 because it has no known leaching characteristics and is softer if you hit a bump on the trail. If you’d rather avoid plastic altogether, a stainless steel screw-on lid is available as an accessory.
Can I put hot liquids in my Klean Kanteen?
No. Klean Kanteen bottles are single walled and not for use with hot liquids. Warm beverages can be used at personal comfort level. The single-walled construction allows for more volume and the option to put your Kanteen on a flame.
Can I put my Kanteen in the freezer?
We do not recommend it and it will void the one-year warranty against manufacturer defects.
Can I put my Kanteen on a stove?
In a pinch, the Kanteen can be placed on fire or a stove. Beware not to melt the plastic lid or burn yourself.
What is stainless steel?
Stainless steel is an iron-containing alloy made from some of the basic elements found on earth: iron ore, chromium, silicon, nickel, carbon, nitrogen, and manganese. Properties of the final alloy are tailored by varying amounts of these elements. There are more than 57 stainless steels recognized as standard alloys on the market. Klean Kanteens are constructed from high quality sanitary grade 304 stainless steel which has a low nickel content. Stainless steel has excellent resistance to stain or rust due to its chromium content making it a material of choice among the food processing, dairy and brewery industries. Stainless steel is easy to clean, durable, inert and sanitary.

Klean Kanteen compared to Sigg
By Lee Abraham
Last month I bought a 40oz Klean Kanteen bottle and a 33oz Sigg bottle. In the end I prefer the Klean Kanteen.
Both bottles are very light and look good. The Sigg is lighter, but not so much to really matter. Sigg wins easily in the looks department with different artwork to choose from and the bottle I have has a nice textured powder coat finish compared to the KK basic look and smooth surface.
Sigg uses an epoxy to protect your water from the aluminum and tells you not to use the bottle for long term storage. Could be a bit worrisome not knowing what’s in the epoxy and the possibility of aluminum contamination. I have not noticed a metallic taste from either bottle drinking straight unfiltered tap water. I prefer the stainless steel of the KK just because it’s probably on the safer side.
The bottles are both lightweight and made of thin metal. I haven’t dented either but I have been very careful with them. Both feel like they would dent quite easily. I have not scratched either bottle and the paint on both looks like new after daily use from work to the gym.
The KK bottle has the cap threading formed into the neck of the bottle while the Sigg uses a metal ring insert in the top of the bottle to thread the cap onto. Some people have complained that the Sigg’s threaded insert is sharp, but I have not had this problem. The KK is more comfortable to drink from though. Also the wide mouth of the bottle makes it easy to put ice cubes in, which you can’t do with the Sigg unless you have very small ice cubes.
I have the loop cap on both bottles. The Sigg I really have to twist the cap on tight so it doesn’t leak. The KK cap seals quite easily and has never leaked. The KK also uses a thicker thread size and is easier to screw the cap onto because of this.
Some people are complaining about sweating. On a hot day with the bottles filled with ice cubes both will sweat, but plastic bottles will also.
If I was going to spend that much money on a water bottle again, I would go with Klean Kanteen without a second thought. The only advantage of the Siggs is the exterior design.

Great item for “Green” folks
By April
We bought two Swedish reusable bottles a year ago and wanted more for Christmas gifts, but they are hard to get at this time. With that knowledge, we bought two Klean Kanteens (KK) for workplace gift swaps this December. Having “greened” ourselves more and more over the last several years, we wanted-ecologically responsible and useful gifts that would not be white elephants in someone’s garage. I ordered two KK in “treebark” and “black” and they were very attractive. At both swaps the person who got one was very pleased and elected to keep it, not trade it. On the bottles: the colors are bright and richly colored, the feel very solid, heavy and durable. I personally like the screw-on loop caps over the flip tops that can be used. The bottle has a wide mouth, and the bottle itself fits comfortably in the hand. I still love my Swedish bottle best of all, but these KK are a close second place! These bottles are lined so that they will not absorb flavors if you go from water to juice, and can be run through the dishwasher. They are not insulated, so hot stuff heats the metal, but they are not meant for that. Being stainless steel, when their lifetime ends, they should be recycled. You can feel confident buying one of these for anyone in your life who buys plastic water bottles. They’ll never need to buy anymore!

I love klean kanteen
By E. Matesich
I recently bought the klean kanteen 18 oz. bottle in pink. It fits in my purse and is the perfect size for taking to work. It also makes me feel safe because I know it’s not leaching any harmful chemicals into my drink! Also, the water does NOT take on a funny taste from the bottle. I typically enjoy water in this bottle, but other cold beverages also taste good.
